my second mom (joe's mom) told me story today that I surely thought fit to share. Anna, I hope you don't mind.
"I was shopping in Kroger [grocery store in ohio] tonight and I needed a rain check. The cashier, who was probably in his mid to late 20's didn't have any and asked the guy next to him for some. Then he saw some laying in front of his register and he said here are some, I must be (the r word!). And I spoke up and said that word was offensive to me and to other people and he was surprised and said he was sorry and I said you should be! It was just a natural reaction for me."
We can change our words and awareness is step one. The R word is an offensive word and it takes guts to stand up to someone (especially someone you don't know) and say that.
To my children's grandmother: you did Noah proud today.
And you did right by that man behind the counter and I doubt he will speak that word again (at least without thinking twice).
I am a proud daughter-in-law.
