only in maine.

Got home the other night pretty late. By home, of course, I mean my mom and dad's house. Joe and I had been in Portland for the evening. My mother, just like 20 years ago, fell asleep on the couch waiting. We were all talking when Joe noticed something walking up the road. My parents live on a very secluded, rural road in Maine. And walking up, in the middle of the street, was a moose. Yes, a moose. It walked up until it got in front of my parents house and just stood, in front of the mailbox, staring (at nothing). Rumor has it they're not the smartest animals. I have seen them before in Maine, but never like this. Never this close or this still. It didn't move for 10 minutes or more. Joe was in awe. It was as though the real Santa Clause had just parked his sleigh and was waiting out front.

Joe decided he needed a photo. But sadly, when the door opened the moose awkwardly ran away. It's legs are so long that it literally could leap over the full sized fence. Amazing.

As I say often... we all have our stuff. We have gators. They have moose (or is it meese??). :)

The word "moose" came to us from Algonquian Indians. Consequently its plural, instead of being "mooses" or "meese", is the same as the singular. That is true of most Indian names whether of a tribe, such as the Winnebago and Potawatomi, or of an object such as papoose. It is also true of many wildlife names not of Indian origin -- for example: deer, mink and grouse.

Hope your trip home went smoothly. I was hoping to see you guys one more time. My Mom is really upset that she missed you. She just lost track of time, and then had a massive migraine.

Someday after we get our girl home, we'll makd the trip your way :)
